Records Officer's End of Season Report - 1st January 2005 to 31st December 2005
Prepared by Brent Walker.
Introduction
Firstly - an apology - there has been a marked absence of Records Officer reports over recent months and this is solely due to work and other commitments having to take precedence. Hopefully this bumper edition will make up for things!
What, Where & When
As usual this report begins with an analysis of the number of rounds shot each month over the outdoor season:
554 scores were submitted for 2005, over 50 more than the previous year - most of the difference accounted for at the start of the season, together with a small surplus at the end of the season as well. For the principal summer months there were appreciably fewer scores submitted in 2005 compared to 2004
Skipton attracted very few archers and it perhaps not surprising that the Rugby Club terminated our arrangement there:
In terms of scores submitted by bow type, there has been a marked increase in the proportion of longbow scores, as demonstrated by the table below. The longbow fraternity seem particularly hardy types as they kept on shooting outdoors well into the Autumn/early Winter months!

At the end of the day the National reigned supreme as the Club's favourite round (no surprises there then!). There were almost twice as many National rounds shot than the next most popular round, which was a Long National - there's clearly a need for us all to get a bit of weight training and shoot some of the longer distance rounds!!
The Who and How Well
47 archers submitted scores during the outdoor season and of these worthy souls there were a `hardcore' of 22 archers who submitted 10 scores or more.
However the most prolific shooter award for 20005 goes to David Thompson who submitted 41 rounds. Following on close behind was Hilary Lydon who submitted 39 scores. The next two most frequent submitters were Robert Powell and Roger Grech (34 and 32 scores respectively) and therein lies a tale.
Over the summer months it was noticed that Robert and Roger's scores appeared in tandem, both archers shooting the same round on the same day. After asking a few pertinent questions it emerged that both archers were engaged in a `duel', turning up at St Ives and picking a round at random (using specially designed `choosing cards') and then shooting that round on a head to head basis see to who won.
This was altogether too fascinating a prospect for an information anorak like yours truly to ignore so reproduced below is a blow-by-blow analysis of the duel:

As you can see both archers achieved exactly the same score on two separate occasions. For the purposes of the analysis, it was decided to award both archers a match point in this situation, although in reality the round was decided on a sudden-death 1-arrow shoot-off. Roger won the first of these on the 31st of July but unfortunately the score sheet did not indicate who was the victor on the second occasion this occurred. Despite this uncertainty it is clear that in the end Roger was victorious. Next year beckons and other groups of archers are allegedly enamoured of the idea so some interesting ding-dongs are likely over the spring and summer months.
With regard to handicaps and classifications, Georgina Brown maintained her position as top improver, reducing her handicap by a staggering 22 points during the season. This, together, with her triumph at the junior nationals suggest that big sister, Dani, had better watch her back! The majority of archers who had submitted scores improved their handicap by at least 1 point, but other big improvers included Vivienne Horn (14), Michelle Vincent (11), Guy Jones (12), Robert Powell (13) and Helen Brown (12).
In terms of classifications this was the year when the club had not one but two Master Bowmen - both Dani Brown and Renee Metcalfe shooting the requisite (high) scores at the requisite places (record status tournaments). Dani achieved both junior and senior MB in the season. Both archers also narrowly missed out on their 1300 FITA red shields - better luck next year to both of them.
If this wasn't enough there was also a prolific number of Bowmen in the club, both compound and recurve. Ian Metcalfe, Adam Thompson and David Thompson achieved BM status comfortably with Ian nudging MB standard shooting, (surely to be achieved in 2006). Pat Thompson narrowly missed out on BM-status. In compound land both Georgina and Helen Brown gained BM status, as did Stephen Howard.
Whilst no club member attained BM status in the Longbow, special mention must be made concerning Hilary Lydon who achieved Longbow first class. 12 other archers also achieved first class in their respective disciplines.
In terms of club records, Ian Metcalfe and David Thompson kept rewriting the records books practically every time they shot although in the end it was Ian who claimed the majority of recurve gents club records. Adam Thompson also kept his name up in lights for the boys U14 recurve category. Dani, Helen and Georgina Brown also had a monopoly on their respective age group records in the compound category.
Following a request a Longbow club records section has now been introduced. Based on the scores submitted in the 2004 and 2005 outdoor season. Given the increased interest in longbow archery it is probable that the many blank entries will be filled over coming months !
Good shooting everyone!
Brent Walker, Records Officer, February 2006
